Nintendo Ends Game Voucher Sales for Original Switch After Jan. 31, 2026
Nintendo will stop selling Game Vouchers for the original Nintendo Switch after Jan. 31, 2026; vouchers bought before then remain redeemable for 12 months, but Switch 2 titles are not included.

Nintendo updated its Switch Online / Game Vouchers FAQ on Jan. 20, 2026 to announce that the Game Voucher product for the original Nintendo Switch will no longer be sold after Jan. 31, 2026. The Game Voucher was a one-time purchase option that let players pick two first-party retail eShop titles at a fixed, discounted price, making it a go-to bargain for families and collectors building a library on the original hardware.
Vouchers purchased prior to the cutoff will remain usable for 12 months from the date of purchase, Nintendo clarified. The FAQ lists deadline times in Eastern and Pacific time zones, so shoppers should confirm the exact cutoff in their local time before attempting a purchase. New sales of the Game Voucher for Switch 1 will cease at the stated time, while previously bought vouchers will still be honored for the allotted redemption window.
Importantly for players planning hardware upgrades, Nintendo confirmed the voucher catalogue does not include Switch 2 titles. Switch 2 versions and paid upgrade paths from Switch to Switch 2 are handled separately from the voucher program. That means buying a voucher to pick up a first-party Switch 1 release will not automatically grant a Switch 2 version or a paid upgrade to the newer platform unless Nintendo specifically offers that option through other channels.
The change reflects Nintendo’s broader transition as the Switch 2 lifecycle becomes central to new first-party releases and promotional efforts. First-party titles that launch going forward will increasingly be tied to Switch 2 marketing and bundle strategies, shifting the promotional center away from legacy Switch 1 discounts like the two-for-one voucher model.
For the community, the immediate decision point is clear: purchase any Game Vouchers you want before Jan. 31, 2026 if you value the two-title discount on Switch 1 software. Check the voucher catalogue carefully to confirm which first-party games are eligible, and factor in the 12-month redemption window when planning purchases for seasonal sales or family gifting. Do not assume a voucher pickup guarantees access to a future Switch 2 build without an explicit upgrade offer.
Nintendo’s move is both practical and symbolic. Practically, it closes a known, wallet-friendly path to pick up first-party Switch 1 games; symbolically, it signals that Nintendo sees Switch 2 as the focal point for new software and promotions. Expect future discounts and bundles to concentrate on Switch 2 hardware and its storefront offerings, and verify any upgrade promises before you buy.
