No Man's Sky Xeno Arena Update Adds Pokémon-Style Creature Battling for Free
Hello Games' 38th free No Man's Sky update adds a full Pokémon-style creature battler with 8 elemental affinities, ranked leagues, and turn-based combat inside the 10-year-old space game.

Hello Games dropped a surprise today, though anyone who spotted the stadium emoji Sean Murray posted to social media had a one-symbol head start. Xeno Arena, version 6.3 of No Man's Sky, is a free update that transforms the decade-old space explorer into a full-blown creature battler. Murray called it "an entire multiplayer game all of its own, with absolutely tons of depth, now existing within No Man's Sky," and the system earns that description.
Eight elemental affinities sit at the core of the combat loop, each tied to a creature's species and the biome where it evolved. A fire-based companion may dominate fights against frozen-world creatures while taking heavy damage from radioactive attacks. That environmental logic extends into the collection meta: hazardous and rare biomes produce more powerful creatures, and legendary variants with exceptional stats are scattered across the galaxy's most dangerous corners. Murray summed up the design philosophy cleanly: "A blob creature evolved on a toxic planet has different abilities to a flying dino born on a frozen moon."
Fights unfold on Holo-Arena tables, which project holographic versions of creatures so companions take no physical harm during matches. Tables appear at planetary buildings, space stations, some settlements, and aboard the Space Anomaly. A new NPC, Iteration: Oceanus, identified as "the collector," now occupies the Space Anomaly and serves as the entry point for anyone getting into the league. Players who prefer to host can construct their own buildable Xeno Arena and run multiplayer tournaments from it.
The Arena League, a new in-game faction, features five varieties of ranked medals, guidance missions, and special titles for top players. Daily challenges pay out nanites and gene-altering retroviral pellets, a new item that accelerates battle trait upgrades. Seasonal competitive rewards are also on the roadmap. To support expanded rosters, the maximum number of tamed creatures a player can own jumped from 18 to 30.
Breeding for competition is handled through the Egg Sequencer, expanded in this update to let players create new creature variants, alter colors, and produce offspring specifically tuned for combat. Hello Games explicitly named Pokémon, Palworld, and World of Warcraft's pet battling system as the inspirations behind all of it.
For players jumping in today: prioritize exploring the most hazardous biomes available to you. Toxic, radioactive, and extreme-temperature worlds yield creatures with higher base stats and broader move sets drawn from a pool of hundreds of unique battle abilities. Build a squad that spans multiple affinities to avoid elemental blind spots, then run daily challenges for retroviral pellets to push your team's battle traits forward. The Space Anomaly is the fastest first stop, with Holo-Arena tables and Iteration: Oceanus both accessible there before you invest in building your own arena.
Xeno Arena is the 38th significant free content update Hello Games has delivered since No Man's Sky launched in August 2016, a launch so troubled it became a cautionary tale in gaming. The studio rebuilt the game update by update across nearly a decade, and the 2026 tenth anniversary finds it with real momentum: in September 2025, it peaked at 110,893 concurrent Steam players, its highest count since launch. Murray marked the occasion directly: "2026 represents 10 years since we launched and I couldn't be prouder."
The update is free and live now on PC, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
