Owlcat recasts The Expanse: Osiris Reborn male lead after beta feedback

Owlcat Games is recasting the male protagonist in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn after closed-beta players pushed back hard on the performance, a rare pre-launch change that reaches into the game’s core story setup. The studio said the previous voice work for the male lead, and for J, was solid but not expressive enough, while the female protagonist voice actor will stay in place.

The change matters because Osiris Reborn is built around a custom protagonist with background options including Belter, Earther and Martian, and that player character is tied to a twin sibling, J, who shares the same actor. Owlcat said some of J’s lines are being reworked regardless of player gender, making this more than a simple cosmetic swap. The studio also acknowledged that battle cries had grown repetitive and that the ask system was still a work in progress.

The beta that prompted the reaction went live on April 22, 2026 and was only available to Founders who bought Miller’s Pack or the Collector’s Edition. Owlcat said it was meant to take about one to two hours and included one full mission, four main-character presets, one companion, J, the mercenary Zafar, eight firearms and nine abilities. The character creator was not part of the build, which limited how much of the full RPG experience players could test.

That still did not stop the feedback from landing. Players on Steam complained that the voice acting sounded generic and that Belter Creole was missing, while others said the protagonist performance pulled them out of the world Owlcat is trying to build. The studio’s response suggests it saw the same problem internally, since Owlcat said a full rework was already on the roadmap and the beta feedback confirmed what the team wanted to improve.

Osiris Reborn is still slated for Spring 2027, with official listings pointing to PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, plus PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox has also said the game will arrive on Game Pass on day one. The story opens on Eros Station, where a Pinkwater Security mercenary’s shore leave turns into a quarantine crisis against the backdrop of Earth, Mars and the Belt on the brink of collapse.

For Owlcat, which says it is headquartered in Cyprus and has more than 450 employees across several offices, the recast is a clear signal that it would rather spend the time and money now than carry beta criticism into launch. In a crowded RPG market, that kind of responsiveness is becoming part of the pitch.
