An upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution will be rolling out to PS5 Pro players in the coming weeks, and Resident Evil Requiem is confirmed as the first title to ship with the more advanced upscaler, PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny announced. Sony published a screenshot comparison for Resident Evil Requiem showing the original PSSR image next to the upgraded result, and observers noted individual hair strands look slightly more defined in the new image.

“PSSR is an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them, and it’s been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 titles on PS5 Pro to date,” Cerny wrote, framing the update as an evolution of a system already deployed across many games. Cerny also said the new release “takes a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm,” signaling changes beneath the hood rather than a simple parameter tweak.

Sony tied the technical work to Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD that incorporates elements of AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology. “Through AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology, PC gamers have already seen the benefits of our collaboration,” Cerny wrote, and added that the updated PSSR delivers “the very latest of this co‑developed technology with a further six months of refinement for PS5 Pro players.”

PlayStation said multiple existing games will receive upgrades in March and that a PS5 system software update will arrive at that time. After that update, PS5 Pro owners can enable the new upscaler by selecting “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” in Settings on PS5 Pro to experience the updated PSSR in any PS5 Pro game that currently supports PSSR. The PlayStation Blog included a “Download this image” option under the Resident Evil Requiem screenshot for side‑by‑side viewing.

Capcom’s senior manager Masaru Ijuin weighed in on the integration for Resident Evil Requiem. “The upgraded PSSR has allowed us to elevate our expressiveness by successfully processing these details and textural particularities, which are traditionally difficult to upscale because of their intricacy. We hope you will experience this unprecedented level of horror and visual fidelity, and the new gameplay feel it delivers,” Ijuin wrote, referencing enhanced hair and facial detail for protagonist Grace Ashcroft.

Reviewer and community impressions have already begun to appear. Gizmodo and Tom’s Guide reported that Resident Evil Requiem appears to run noticeably better on PS5 Pro than on the base PS5, with improved lighting and a mostly consistent 60 frames per second noted by reviewers. Forum discussion on ResetEra has dubbed the release “PSSR 2.0” while praising the image quality improvements, though Sony continues to call the feature simply PSSR.

Sony did not publish a definitive list of March upgrades beyond Resident Evil Requiem, and suggested rollout timing is “in the coming weeks.” Expect more detailed announcements and hands‑on comparisons once the March system update goes live and publishers begin enabling the new setting for their PS5 Pro titles.
