Crow Valley Woodturners plans open discussion night for competition prep
Crow Valley Woodturners set aside its May 14 club night for open discussion on interclub competition prep, with members heading into a familiar Thursday-night format.

Crow Valley Woodturners set aside its Thursday, May 14, 2026, club night at 7:00 pm for an open discussion on interclub competition preparation, a format that put competition work front and center at the Community Education Centre, The Highway, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran, NP44 2HF.
For a club that runs on a clear Thursday rhythm, the choice made sense. Crow Valley says the first Thursday of the month is usually reserved for demonstrations, the third Thursday for show-and-tell based on a monthly theme, and the other Thursdays for workshop sessions. That structure gave the May 14 meeting a practical edge, with members using the evening to compare notes, sharpen entries and talk through the details that matter before a piece is shown outside the club.

Crow Valley’s membership mix also suited the format. The club says it has around sixty members, including beginners, improvers, experienced turners, tutors and professionals. That range meant an open discussion night could cover more than one lane of competition work, from form and surface finish to mounting, texture, embellishment and the sort of consistency judges expect when work is lined up for a formal look. The club also runs regular competition sessions and keeps a library of woodturning books, magazines, videos and DVDs for members, adding more tools for anyone refining a piece before entry.
The May 14 session sat inside a club with a long local track record. Crow Valley Woodturners was formed in 2006 by Peter Bradwick, who was later named an MBE for services to wood turning. A local report said the club still meets every Thursday and welcomes new members, while the club’s own information says visitors can try woodturning under supervision for free for a couple of weeks. The group’s news page also lists an April 2026 newsletter and a 20th anniversary celebration day, underlining how established the club had become.

That competition focus was not new. Crow Valley and Avon & Bristol Woodturners held an inaugural interclub competition in May 2025, giving members a recent benchmark for the kind of work and presentation likely to come under review again. With that history behind it, the open discussion night was less a general club chat than a checkpoint, a chance to sort out the fit, finish and judgment calls that can decide how a turning stands up when it leaves the clubroom.
