Smash-and-Grab Robberies Target Burlington Mall Jewelry Stores
Four masked suspects with hammers hit Burlington's Mapleview Mall twice in weeks, stealing jewelry worth more than $100,000 as police link the getaway car to a Toronto theft.

Four masked suspects armed with hammers walked into Michael Hill at Mapleview Shopping Centre in Burlington shortly before 4 p.m. on March 16, smashed through the glass jewelry display cases, and were gone before police arrived. It was the third time in less than two months that the same mall had been hit.
Const. Jeff Dillon of Halton Regional Police confirmed the suspects, all male, wore black clothing and face coverings. Multiple pieces of jewelry were taken; the exact value and items stolen remained unclear as of the investigation's opening days.
The March 16 robbery was the latest in a pattern that police are still working to untangle. On February 20, at approximately 7:50 p.m., four suspects entered Charm Diamond Centres at 900 Maple Avenue, the Mapleview Mall address, and used hammers to break into numerous display cases. Those suspects fled in a waiting black Honda CRV, possibly driven by a fifth suspect, and investigators later determined the vehicle had been stolen from Toronto. The suspects were described as male, between 5'5" and 5'8", with small builds, wearing dark clothing and face coverings.
Before that, on January 25, four masked suspects entered Michael Hill at the same mall just before 3 p.m. and smashed display cases with hammers. They fled in a waiting newer-model dark grey Honda Civic driven by a fifth suspect. Halton Regional Police have not yet linked that January robbery to the subsequent incidents.
A business owner identified only by surname as Akuffo, who has operated in the area for 26 years, put the losses from at least one of the incidents in stark terms. "The total value of the stolen goods is in excess of $100,000," he said, adding context about why jewelry stores are increasingly attractive targets: "Gold and silver prices have gone up like crazy in the past few months. One gram of gold is $222."

Akuffo said he warned his staff not to intervene if the same scenario unfolded at his location. When masked suspects did appear at his store, armed with hammers and at least one knife, he was mid-transaction with a customer. "You're a small business. You're trying to make ends meet and just like that, someone takes it away from you," he said.
No injuries were reported in any of the three incidents at Mapleview Mall. The February 20 incident prompted a mall lockdown, according to witness accounts. Shoppers reported seeing a group of teens, male and female, sprinting from the area, with some estimating as many as 15 people near the scene. Police described four suspects inside the store in that incident, with a possible fifth in the getaway vehicle.
Charm Diamond Centres, located near the Sporting Life at the north end of the mall, typically employs store security guards, though it was unclear whether guards were present at the time of the February robbery. One Mapleview employee described the sound of shattering display cases as resembling gunfire. "It sounded like shots were fired when the glass was breaking," the employee told local media.
Halton Regional Police are asking anyone with security or dash-cam footage from around the time of any of these incidents to contact the 3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2316.
