A 15.33-carat rutilated topaz set in 18K yellow gold took first place in INSTORE’s Gold Under 5K category, and the judges kept returning to the same idea: restraint made the stone feel more expensive, not less. Sarah York said the simple gold setting made the ring “classic but wearable,” while Daniela Balzano called “the stone the story” and noted the natural inclusions that gave it a painterly look. Tracey Ellison went even further, calling it “a perfect summer piece.”

That first-place ring, priced at $3,170 by AMÁLI JEWELRY, captured the category’s quiet-luxury register without leaning on heavy ornament or flashy scale. It was the kind of gold purchase that can move from weekday denim to evening linen with no costume change, because the design leaves room for the gem to do the work. In a category built around versatility, that matters more than excess.

Second place went to AMÁL JEWELRY for a necklace in 18K yellow gold with a carved 12.55-carat boulder opal phoenix, priced at $4,950. Third place went to SHY CREATION for the Solana Matte bangle bracelet in 14K yellow gold, priced at $3,600. Taken together, the top three showed how the strongest under-$5K gold pieces avoid looking overworked: one uses a single standout stone, one turns to sculptural carving, and one leans into a matte surface that softens the shine of yellow gold.

AMÁLI JEWELRY also won Retailer’s Choice for tassel earrings in 18K yellow gold featuring Australian boulder opal, 3.60 TCW, and fringe, priced at $3,600. The retailer vote, drawn from hundreds of jewelers nationwide, reinforced the same buying logic seen in the category results: clean lines, distinctive materials and enough personality to justify the spend without pushing the design into trend-chasing territory.

The Gold Under 5K competition sat inside the 11th edition of the INSTORE Design Awards, which drew 229 entries, matching the prior year. Six retailers and three media personalities judged the categories through blind voting, and a new Small Batch Colored Gemstone category, for makers with five or fewer employees, underscored how strongly colored stones are driving this year’s jewelry conversation. In a crowded field that also included diamond, pearl, silver, men’s jewelry, engagement and wedding, and platinum categories, the winning gold pieces stood out by staying precise, wearable and visually calm.
