Lauren Sánchez Bezos turns Met Gala look into pearl-jewelry statement
Pearl straps turned Sánchez Bezos’s Schiaparelli gown into a necklace at the neckline, while the Madame X reference reignited debate over the Bezos couple’s Met Gala role.

Lauren Sánchez Bezos made the neckline itself the jewel at the Met Gala, stepping out in a deep navy Schiaparelli gown whose chunky pearl-and-diamond straps slipped off her shoulders and framed a plunging front like a built-in necklace. Diamond drop earrings and a sculptural ring sharpened the look, but the eye stayed fixed on the shoulder line, where pearls and stones replaced the need for a separate strand.
The styling pointed straight to John Singer Sargent’s Madame X, the 1884 portrait of Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau that showed one gown strap slipping from the shoulder before Sargent later repainted it after the canvas drew more ridicule than praise at the Paris Salon. Sánchez Bezos kept that tension intact. In Schiaparelli’s hands, the reference became less about costume history than about construction: the pearl-embellished straps did the work of jewelry while remaining part of the dress, turning the bodice into a place where couture and adornment met without a visible seam.
That choice landed on a night loaded with scrutiny. Sánchez Bezos served as an honorary co-chair of the 2026 Met Gala alongside Jeff Bezos, and the couple were also the event’s lead sponsors. WWD noted that 2026 was the first time in Met Gala history that individual lead sponsors also held honorary chair positions, a distinction that only intensified the online reaction as criticism and praise traded places across social media. For all the sparkle, the conversation was just as much about power and patronage as it was about pearls.

The timing tied the look to the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Costume Art, which opens to the public on May 10, 2026, and runs through January 10, 2027 in nearly 12,000 square feet of new galleries adjacent to the Great Hall at The Met Fifth Avenue. The gala livestream began at 5:30 p.m. EDT on May 4, 2026, but Sánchez Bezos’s neckline delivered the evening’s clearest styling argument: in formalwear, integrated pearl detailing can replace a necklace entirely and still read as opulent as any high jewelry suite.
