Adams County families had to start using a new portal Tuesday to keep track of student meal accounts, preload lunch money and make other school payments, a change that puts cafeteria access and account balances in one digital system.

The Adams County Ohio Valley School District said its new cafeteria system began Tuesday, May 7, and that PaySchools Central became the parent portal for meals and payments. Parents and guardians can set up an account on a computer or tablet, or use the mobile app through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

For households that rely on a tight school routine, the switch matters at lunch line speed. A parent who does not log in, load funds or check activity could face a surprise balance, while staff in the food service office will need to help families through the transition as they move from the old setup to the new one. The district’s dining page lists the main office number as 937-544-5586, and district staff listings name Shari Austin as administrative secretary for Child Nutrition Services.

The portal change came in a district where meal policy has already been a major operational issue. On Sept. 15, 2020, Adams County Ohio Valley announced that its Child Nutrition Department would offer free breakfast and lunch to all students under a USDA waiver. On Oct. 31, 2025, the district said there would be no disruption to its free breakfast and lunch program during the government shutdown. Those moves showed how central school meals have become in Adams County, where breakfast and lunch decisions affect daily family budgets as much as school schedules.

The broader state framework helps explain why the portal still matters even when some students eat at no cost. Ohio Department of Education and Workforce guidance says the Community Eligibility Provision allows schools in high-poverty communities to serve breakfast and lunch free to all enrolled students without household applications. Even then, districts still need a way to manage fees, track meal activity and keep family accounts current.

Adams County Ohio Valley has also posted child nutrition documents including meal applications, helpful hints, a price list and alternative meal procedure materials, signaling that food service remains a centralized district function. With the new system now in place, the first test is simple: whether parents can log in, load funds and keep meals moving without disruption in West Union, Peebles and Seaman.
