Barnhart sets West Union strikeout record in loss to Eastern Brown
Thomas Barnhart struck out 17 Eastern Brown hitters and still took the loss, but the night also put West Union’s future in sharper focus.

Thomas Barnhart carved out a place in West Union High School history on May 8, even if the scoreboard told a different story. The sophomore right-hander struck out 17 Eastern Brown hitters in an 8-0 loss, breaking the Dragons’ single-game record of 16 set by Kyle Taylor.
The performance was even more unusual because Eastern Brown junior Jaiden Florence also broke his school’s strikeout record in the same game, fanning 18 West Union batters. All eight Eastern Brown runs were unearned, a harsh reminder of how much Barnhart has carried a West Union team that has struggled to give him support.

Barnhart’s season has looked nothing like a typical losing pitcher’s line. At the time, he was hitting .548 with a .667 on-base percentage and three home runs, all of which led the Southern Hills Athletic Conference. On the mound, he owned a 0.48 earned-run average and 96 strikeouts, also tops in the league. His win-loss record stood at 1-9 largely because so many of the runs scored against him were unearned, a split between elite individual numbers and a team still searching for consistency.

That contrast has defined West Union’s spring under first-year head coach John Shelton, who took over the program in 2026. Barnhart’s record night came after he already authored the Dragons’ first win of the season on April 21, when he threw a no-hitter against Ripley. He struck out all 15 outs that night and was one error away from a perfect game.
Barnhart kept producing after that. On May 6, he had three hits and three RBIs in another win over Ripley, pushing his batting average to .538 as West Union improved to 2-13 overall and 2-8 in conference play. Two weeks earlier, a trip to North Adams underscored the defensive issues around him, as Barnhart was charged with 11 runs in a game where West Union committed 12 errors.
The May 8 loss to Eastern Brown was not just another defeat. It was another reminder that Barnhart has become the centerpiece of a program trying to rebuild around one of the most productive seasons in recent West Union baseball memory.
