Luke Coker, son of Jeffrey and Beth Coker of Burlington, secured one of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Kenan Music Scholarships after several rounds of auditions and interviews on December 20, 2025. The award covers all expenses for attending UNC Chapel Hill and provides professional development and master classes with internationally renowned performers. Coker was recognized for his dual talents as a composer and cellist, becoming only the third composer to earn the scholarship and the first composer recipient since 2018. He is the first winner ever from Alamance County.

Coker began playing cello at age three and developed a performance track record across North Carolina. He joined the Williams High School Orchestra in 2020, the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra in 2021, and the NC Honors Orchestra in 2023. During the COVID lockdown of 2020 he taught himself to compose, and he has since performed locally while volunteering with younger students at Smith Elementary to support their orchestra participation. He plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill and major in Music.

The selection of a local student for a scholarship that historically has gone to top high school musicians nationally is likely to draw attention to arts programming and resource allocation in Alamance County schools. The Kenan Music Scholarship elevates a clear pathway from K through higher education in the arts, and may prompt school leaders and county officials to reexamine support for music staffing, instruments, and extracurricular ensembles that help produce competitive applicants. For students and families, the award demonstrates that full college support for high level arts achievement can originate in local public schools.

Civic and community organizations that sponsor music education may see new opportunities for partnerships with UNC Chapel Hill and regional orchestras as a result of Coker joining that network. Local educators can point to his volunteer work at Smith Elementary as a direct example of how student success feeds back into community engagement. As Coker prepares for college study, his accomplishment offers a concrete moment for residents and policymakers to consider how sustained investment in arts education can expand access to scholarships and professional pathways for future Alamance County students.
