A vehicle fire on Grace Avenue raced toward a Burlington home Thursday afternoon, but firefighters reached the scene in just under four minutes and stopped it before the blaze could become a house fire.

The Burlington Fire Department was dispatched to 821 Grace Ave. at 3:06 p.m. on April 30, 2026. When crews arrived, they found a vehicle burning beside an adjacent utility structure, with flames already moving toward the house at the same address. Firefighters confirmed no one was inside the vehicle or either structure, then worked to cut off the spread and bring the fire under control.

The blaze was under control in less than 15 minutes after firefighters arrived. Officials estimated $18,000 in damage to the structures and $27,000 in damage to the contents. No injuries were reported.

The close call underscored how quickly a vehicle fire can turn into a much larger neighborhood emergency when it starts near a house, outbuilding or utility structure. In this case, the fire reached more than one target before crews got it stopped, and the fast response likely kept the loss from becoming far worse.

The property at 821 Grace Ave. is listed as a multi-family home, or triplex, built in 1950. That kind of setup can leave little separation between a burning vehicle, a utility structure and the living space next door, which is exactly why firefighters had to move fast when they arrived.

The Burlington Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Burlington Police Department and Alamance County EMS. The city fire department lists its office at 215 S. Church St. in Burlington and says residents should call 911 in an emergency. Alamance County EMS lists its office at 296 E Crescent Square Dr. in Graham and names Josh Kylander as EMS director.

The fire’s cause remained under investigation. For Grace Avenue and surrounding streets, the outcome was a narrow one: a burning vehicle, a threatened home and a fire crew that arrived quickly enough to keep the damage from spreading any farther.
