CAA softball championship brings NCAA berth chase to Elon University

The Coastal Athletic Association’s softball championship turned Hunt Softball Park into the center of the league race for an automatic NCAA berth, with six teams playing 11 games on Elon University’s campus in Elon from Wednesday through Saturday.

Hofstra entered as the No. 1 seed after winning the North Division with a 21-3 conference record, while UNC Wilmington and Campbell split the South Division title. Stony Brook was seeded No. 4, College of Charleston No. 5 and Elon No. 6 as the host team, giving Alamance County a field that mixed a defending league champion, regional rivals and a nationally relevant prize: the CAA’s automatic bid to the 2026 NCAA Division I softball tournament.

The championship mattered beyond the final score because NCAA softball awards 31 automatic bids to conference champions, making league tournaments like this one the fastest route to the national bracket. For Elon, the event also carried a familiar local dimension. The Phoenix won its first-ever CAA softball title in 2025, and the 2026 tournament marked the first time the league championship returned to Hunt Softball Park since Elon first hosted it in 2022.

That repeat hosting is part of a larger pattern for the university and the county. Hunt Softball Park opened before the 2013 season and was built with major local support, including lead gifts of more than $1.25 million from Vicky and Sam Hunt of Burlington. The park’s role as a championship site puts Elon back in front of visiting teams, coaches, families and fans, while also giving the university another week of visibility in a competitive conference that has become part of the local sports calendar.

All 11 games were streamed on FloCollege, extending the reach of the tournament well beyond Alamance County and giving the Elon campus a wider platform as the league’s postseason unfolded. College of Charleston and Hofstra met for the title and the NCAA berth, with the winner moving directly into the national tournament and the rest of the bracket waiting to see which conference champion would join them.
