Former Southern Alamance players earn college baseball academic honors

Southern Alamance graduates Evan Sykes and Parker Evans earned USA South academic honors, and Sykes did it with distinction after meeting the league’s 3.90 standard. The two honors put a local spotlight on a conference that rewards classroom work as strictly as it tracks batting averages, and they show that Alamance County’s baseball pipeline is sending out players who can handle both.

The USA South requires student-athletes to post at least a 3.30 grade-point average in each semester of the academic year to qualify for all-academic status. Anyone at 3.90 or above is listed with distinction. The conference said its 2025-26 Academic All-Conference Team included 1,531 honorees, up from 1,472 the year before, a reminder that the recognition is selective but reaches across the league.

Sykes, a Graham native and Southern Alamance High School graduate, paired the academic honor with one of the most productive seasons in Greensboro College baseball history. Greensboro listed him at .357 in 43 games in 2025, with 56 hits, nine home runs, 48 RBI, 14 doubles, three triples and 30 walks. The school also said he broke the program record for home runs and hits, then finished with career marks of 27 home runs and 192 hits after surpassing 200 career hits in the final regular-season series of 2026.

His play drew major national attention as well. Greensboro named Sykes a D3baseball.com Preseason Second Team All-American for 2026, then later said he earned First Team All-Region honors from both D3baseball.com and ABCA/Rawlings before landing First Team All-America recognition. The school said he became the first Greensboro baseball All-American since Jess Maloney in 2006.

Evans, another Southern Alamance graduate, earned his all-academic nod as a catcher at Methodist. Methodist listed him in 40 games during the 2025 season, with 36 starts, a .281 average, 25 hits, 23 runs, 17 RBI, 25 walks, four doubles, one triple and a .980 fielding percentage. The program also identified him as a USA South All-Tournament Team selection and a Methodist Scholar Athlete.

For Alamance County families watching younger players come through Southern Alamance, the two resumes point to the same lesson: college baseball rewards production, but it also rewards the daily habits that keep a player eligible, dependable and on the field.
