Armed Standoff in Sybille Canyon Ends With Arrest of Colorado Homicide Suspect
Seasonal homeowners in Sybille Canyon found a stranger's stolen Subaru at their property — it led deputies to a homicide suspect wanted in Colorado.

Seasonal homeowners returning to their Sybille Canyon property on March 18 found a stolen green 1995 Subaru Station Wagon parked where it had no business being, with signs that someone was inside the residence. That discovery triggered a standoff that ended with the arrest of Fernando Rodriguez, 44, of Alamosa County, Colorado, a man wanted for second-degree murder.
Albany County Sheriff's Office deputies who responded around 1 p.m. quickly connected the Subaru's license plate to a person of interest out of Colorado carrying an active homicide warrant. They established a perimeter and called for backup, activating the Albany County Joint Special Response Team. Drones went up to monitor Rodriguez's movements inside the residence without exposing deputies to additional risk.
What followed was a prolonged and volatile standoff. Rodriguez refused to come out, and at separate points he emerged carrying a blowtorch and a gas can, then retreated back inside; later he stepped out holding a rifle before retreating again. Deputies considered him armed and dangerous throughout. After attempts to gain voluntary compliance failed, the SRT deployed gas to force a resolution. Rodriguez ultimately walked out and was taken into custody without further incident. No members of the public or responding personnel were injured.
The arrest closed a 17-day investigation stretching back to March 1, when Ryan Barnes, 49, was killed at a residence in the 3000 block of Lincoln Avenue in Alamosa County, Colorado. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Alamosa County Sheriff's Office jointly announced Rodriguez's capture. He now faces charges of second-degree murder, felony menacing, motor vehicle theft, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.
The multi-agency response drew resources from across the region: the Laramie Police Department, Laramie Fire/EMS, Albany County Central Volunteer Fire Department, LifeLine, and the Division of Criminal Investigation all assisted, with records and communications support provided by Laramie and Albany County.
Rodriguez is currently held in the Albany County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Colorado. The homicide investigation remains active.
