Kevin Jones had barely settled into his new role as the incoming head coach of the Allendale-Fairfax Tigers when he sat down with assistant coach Keyshawn Jenkins for a 30-minute conversation last week. Jones walked away "immediately impressed with his passion for the young people he coached." Within days, Jenkins was dead at 27.

Jenkins, of Barnwell, had served the Allendale County School District as an assistant football and track coach and a teaching aide since 2023, while carrying a junior course load in Sports Management at Voorhees University. In the early hours of Saturday, April 4, his 2012 Nissan Maxima ran off the left side of Poplar Road near Red Bud Drive, roughly six miles south of Barnwell, struck a culvert, overturned and hit a utility pole. Jenkins was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene by the Barnwell County coroner, who ruled the cause of death multiple traumatic injuries.

ACSD Superintendent Dr. Vallerie Cave spoke directly to the loss. "My heart is broken," Cave said. "Keyshawn was such an amazing young man with a bright future. He cared so deeply about his ACSD family. His quiet demeanor speaks volumes of his character and integrity. He will always be in our hearts and memory."

Parents called Jenkins a "lifeline," a mentor whose one-on-one conversations reached students others could not. A colleague recalled his consistent morning greetings and the ease with which he connected with young people in the hallways. Former Barnwell High coach Dwayne Garrick pointed to Jenkins' reliability on and off the field as among his defining traits. The functions Jenkins performed, bridging athletics, school climate and student wellbeing, are difficult to quantify but critical for daily stability in a rural district like Allendale County.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation. Standard collision analysis, including speed, toxicology results and roadway conditions on that stretch of Poplar Road, has not yet been completed or released. A final report could also carry public-safety implications for the corridor.

The ACSD now faces an immediate three-part response: deploying grief counselors for students and staff, reassigning coaching duties and planning a memorial for Jenkins. Funeral arrangements remain incomplete; B.F. Cave Funeral Home is handling services, and the Jenkins family is receiving visitors at 629 Ball Park Road in Barnwell.
