Allendale-Fairfax juniors seek donations for senior year celebrations

The junior class at Allendale-Fairfax High School set a $127 goal and asked families to donate anywhere from $1 to $25 to help pay for senior-year celebrations for the Class of 2027, including prom, graduation and baccalaureate.

The school said donors could give more than once, and each gift would be marked off as it came in. That kept the drive simple and visible, with donations accepted through May 8 on the school’s live feed.

The request was small, but the events behind it are not. In 2023, Allendale-Fairfax posted junior and senior prom ticket prices of $50, $55 and $60, depending on when students bought them. Add clothing, transportation, meals and other graduation-season costs, and even one celebration can put pressure on family budgets.

That is part of why the class’s ask matters in Allendale County, where Allendale County Schools serves more than 900 students in a rural district and Allendale-Fairfax High School serves about 250 students in grades 9 through 12. Census data put the county’s population at 7,355 and its median household income at $32,328, a snapshot that helps explain why small-dollar fundraising can carry real weight.

The effort also comes against a longer backdrop of state involvement in local schools. Allendale County Schools has been under state governance since June 19, 2017, when state Superintendent Molly Spearman declared a state of emergency in the district. In that context, a junior class campaign for senior events is more than a class fundraiser. It is a sign that students are learning to organize around a shared goal while trying to keep long-standing high school traditions within reach.

The school’s report card history underscores the stakes. Allendale-Fairfax High School was listed as Unsatisfactory with an overall rating of 31 for 2022-2023 and Below Average with an overall rating of 49 for 2021-2022. For families and students, the money raised now could help preserve the final-year milestones that make senior year feel complete, from prom to graduation night.
