The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie announced a new season of Community Interest Courses for Spring 2026, providing no cost classes for adults age 60 and older on the Allendale campus and at the Walterboro site. The program is intended to broaden continuing education options in the region by offering weekday and evening classes across a variety of subjects and skill levels.
Key offerings on the schedule include Apple Bits and Bytes, an introduction to computers that meets Wednesdays from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Allendale and Fridays from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Walterboro. British Literature will be taught Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Walterboro site by Dr. Carley Robertson. Community music engagement is represented by I am with the Band, Building Community through Music, which will meet Wednesdays from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. in Walterboro beginning January 21 with facilitator Cindy Rossi. Line Dancing will be offered Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Allendale and is also available in Williston with instructor Angela Youmans. Lowcountry Nature Study will run Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Walterboro beginning March 18 with Dr. Eran Kilpatrick. Salkehatchie Stories, focusing on James Brown, will meet Mondays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Allendale Campus Library beginning January 26 with Daniel McDonald Johnson. Morning and afternoon yoga sessions will be led by Tara Boswell on Mondays at 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. in Allendale and Tuesdays at 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in Walterboro.
For residents, the courses remove a common barrier to lifelong learning by eliminating tuition for seniors, while creating regular opportunities for social connection and local cultural engagement. The schedule spreads offerings across Allendale, Walterboro, and Williston, which may help seniors who rely on nearby options and local transit. Providers and civic planners can view the program as a resource for healthy aging and civic participation.
