Northland Pioneer College boosts Friends and Family scholarships for fall 2026

Northland Pioneer College said June 19 that NPC Friends and Family awarded $109,000 in scholarships for fall 2026, the largest total ever for the program. In Apache County, that kind of jump is more than a campus headline, because even modest aid can decide whether a student in St. Johns, Eagar, Springerville, Chinle or Holbrook enrolls at NPC now, waits another semester, or leaves the area for college.

The fall 2026 total marked a sharp rise from the more than $58,000 awarded for fall 2025 and the over $63,000 announced for fall 2024. In June 2024, the college said more than $30,000 still remained to be awarded in that cycle, showing the pool has expanded across multiple years rather than in a one-time burst.

The awards were competitive. WMICentral said 59 of the 77 applicants received scholarships, and the cutoff score was 85%. NPC Friends and Family scholarship materials also say FAFSA must be submitted before applying for at least some cycles, a requirement that matters in rural households where the paperwork itself can be a barrier before a student ever reaches the classroom.

Spring 2026 demand was also high. NPC Friends and Family reported 93 applications received from Oct. 1 to Nov. 13, 2025, with 88 complete applications forwarded to review by eight teams of five reviewers each. The program’s own mission says it advances Northland Pioneer College by providing scholarships that empower students across Navajo and Apache Counties, which puts the fall 2026 increase squarely in the middle of the college’s affordability strategy.

For a first-generation family in St. Johns weighing gas money, books and tuition against staying close to home, the difference between a scholarship pool of more than $58,000 and one that reached $109,000 can change the decision from postponing college to enrolling at NPC. The larger awards do not erase every cost, but they do push more of the bill off local households and onto aid.

NPC Friends and Family’s Arizona Gives page listed $43,918 raised by 89 donors toward a $50,000 goal, underscoring how much the scholarship effort depends on community support. NPC also said Jesse Reeck became the new director of NPC Friends and Family on July 22, 2025, as the foundation took on a more visible role in keeping college within reach for students across northeastern Arizona.
