12-year-old boy seriously injured in Atchison bicycle-car crash
A 12-year-old Atchison boy was struck by a car at Hickory and M streets and rushed to Amberwell Atchison with suspected serious injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

A 12-year-old Atchison boy was seriously hurt when his bicycle was struck by a southbound Ford Fusion at Hickory Street and M Street around 5 p.m. Friday. He was taken to Amberwell Atchison with suspected serious injuries, and the Kansas Highway Patrol said he was not wearing a helmet.
The Patrol said the boy was riding east on M Street when he failed to yield the right-of-way at the intersection. The driver, 26-year-old Talia Rawls of Atchison, was heading south on Hickory Street and was not injured.
The crash log remains preliminary and can be updated for up to 30 days, but the details already show how quickly a neighborhood intersection can turn dangerous when a bicycle and a vehicle reach the same crossing at the same time. In this case, the reported failure to yield and the missing helmet left a child far more vulnerable than the driver.

For Atchison families, the lesson is immediate and specific to streets like Hickory and M: young riders need to be visible, predictable and protected, and drivers need to slow down and watch for bicycles before entering an intersection. At the center of this crash was a routine trip across town, and that is exactly what makes the injury so stark.
