Amberwell, Mosaic launch cancer care program in Atchison

Atchison County cancer patients could soon spend less time on the road and more time getting care, as Amberwell Health and Mosaic Life Care launch Amberwell Cancer Care at Amberwell Atchison. The new program is set to bring chemotherapy, infusion therapy and an onsite oncology clinic to the 25-bed critical access hospital, giving local families a closer option for treatment that often has required long trips out of town.

The partnership, announced Monday, extends an oncology footprint Mosaic already has in Atchison. Mosaic says it provides cancer care here as part of a regional network that also includes St. Joseph, Maryville, Albany and Cameron, Missouri. For patients in Atchison, Effingham, Nortonville and rural parts of the county, the change could mean fewer repeated drives for ongoing treatment, fewer hours lost to travel and a lower burden on caregivers arranging transportation.

Amberwell Atchison sits at the center of that local access push. Amberwell says the hospital grew from the former Atchison Hospital, which rebranded in 2020, and the health system has been building out services that keep more specialty care in northeast Kansas. The cancer program adds to that effort by placing oncology services inside a familiar local hospital setting instead of sending patients exclusively to larger regional facilities.
