Phoenix Productions began the livestream at 9:40 a.m. for Atchison High School’s 10 a.m. graduation in the Atchison High School Gymnasium, giving relatives who lived out of town, older family members and friends who could not get inside a way to watch the ceremony online. The stream also helped preserve the event for later viewing, a practical option for families who wanted to catch the first moments without missing the start.

Atchison High School announced the livestream on May 15, one day before the ceremony, and the district’s calendar placed the graduation inside the AHS Gymnasium on Saturday, May 16. An earlier district post had already said the ceremony would begin at 10 a.m. in the same gym, and the calendar told seniors to meet at Atchison High School at 9 a.m. before the program.

The school’s event schedule also showed how graduation fit into the final week of the academic year. Atchison Public Schools USD 409 listed Senior Awards Night for May 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and seniors were told to wear their graduation robe and stole, but not cap, for that event. The district calendar then marked May 18 as the last day of school for students, placing graduation at the end of the school year’s closing stretch.

For Atchison County families, the livestream widened access to one of the most watched milestones on the school calendar. It gave grandparents, relatives outside Kansas and others who could not make it to the gym a way to stay connected to the ceremony, while also creating a record of the day seniors crossed from one stage of life into the next. In a community where school events draw wide attention, the broadcast extended the reach of the ceremony without changing the basic schedule: 9:40 a.m. for the stream, 10 a.m. for the graduation and 9 a.m. for seniors to be in place.
