Atchison veterans posts plan Memorial Day services May 25, 2026
Memorial Day services are set for May 25 at Atchison County cemeteries, with Legion and VFW posts leading flag presentations, a 21-gun salute and Taps.

Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post 6 and Lt. Jared Fox Jackson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1175 will lead traditional Memorial Day services at area cemeteries in Atchison County on Monday, May 25, 2026, giving families a set day to gather, remember and follow the local route of military honor.
The annual observance will again bring together the post members who have long handled the county’s public remembrance work. Prior Atchison County Memorial Day coverage shows the Legion and VFW visiting each of the county’s cemeteries and carrying out a flag presentation, a 21-gun salute and Taps, a full military tribute that turns the holiday into more than a single stop or brief ceremony.
That tradition matters in Atchison because Memorial Day here is built around place as much as symbolism. The services draw attention to local cemeteries, where veterans, families and neighbors can stand together and mark the graves of service members who died in uniform. Atchison Legion Post 6’s community profile also lists Memorial Day wreaths among its ongoing programs and needs, showing how the holiday remains tied to year-round post activity and volunteer work.

Memorial Day itself has deep roots. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says the observance began as Decoration Day and was formalized in 1868 by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan. It later became a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May. The department also encourages a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time, when Americans are asked to pause for a minute of silence.
The American Legion, chartered by Congress in 1919, says Memorial Day honors more than 1 million men and women who have lost their lives defending the country since the Revolutionary War. In Atchison County, that national meaning is carried out by local hands, with the Legion and VFW posts coordinating the cemetery services so residents can take part in a tradition that has remained visible in the county’s public life for years.
