Atchison woman hospitalized after Lancaster crash at Jewell Road and U.S. 73

A Friday afternoon crash at Jewell Road and U.S. Highway 73 sent Serena Thomas, 50, of Atchison, to the hospital after deputies say a 16-year-old Nortonville boy failed to yield while crossing the highway.

Atchison County Sheriff Jack Laurie’s office said deputies responded around 12:20 p.m. in Lancaster, where the teen was southbound on Jewell Road in a pickup when he entered the highway and collided with Thomas’ eastbound minivan. The force of the impact pushed the minivan off the roadway, where it came to rest on the north side embankment of U.S. 73.

Atchison County EMS transported Thomas to Amberwell Atchison for treatment of unspecified injuries. The teen refused medical treatment at the scene and was cited for failure to yield.

The crash highlights a familiar danger on Atchison County roads, where local side-road crossings can place slower-moving drivers directly in the path of traffic on a major highway. Jewell Road and U.S. 73 are both well-known routes for area motorists, but the Lancaster intersection leaves little margin for error when a vehicle enters the highway at the wrong time.

The county’s rural traffic network depends on quick response from the sheriff’s office and Atchison County EMS, which became a county-run department in January 2017. In a county with 16,249 citizens, a single failure to yield can quickly turn into a hospital run and a roadside emergency.

The Lancaster wreck also comes after another Atchison injury crash earlier this spring involving a teenager who was cited for not yielding, suggesting that right-of-way mistakes remain a recurring concern on county roads.
