One person hospitalized after crash at 6th Street and Raven Hill Road

A Tuesday evening crash at 6th Street and Raven Hill Road sent Kelly Thompson, 59, of Atchison, to Amberwell Hospital after a collision that pulled police and Atchison County EMS to the intersection around 6:15 p.m.

Atchison police said Angela Dugger, 51, of Leavenworth, was eastbound on Raven Hill Road and turning north onto 6th Street in a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am when her car struck Thompson’s southbound 2020 Chevrolet SUV. Thompson was taken by Atchison County EMS for examination.

The crash adds another injury wreck to a stretch of local traffic problems that has already included at least one recent Atchison collision that injured two people and another that sent a teenager to the hospital after a failure-to-yield finding. At 6th Street and Raven Hill Road, where turning traffic and through traffic mix with neighborhood trips, even a routine turn can quickly become a medical call.

Police Chief Mike Wilson is the department’s top official in the city’s public materials, and the crash was handled through the Atchison Police Department as a standard injury-accident investigation. The report available Tuesday did not say whether any citations were issued or whether further enforcement action was pending.

City records also show how these cases move through the local system after the sirens fade. Emergency calls are received through the Atchison County Joint Communications Center, and accident reports are available through the police department, which says citizens and insurance companies commonly request copies after traffic crashes. Those records often become the next step in understanding how and why a wreck happened.

For Thompson, the immediate result was a trip to the hospital. For the neighborhood around 6th Street and Raven Hill Road, it was another reminder that a familiar intersection can still become the site of an injury serious enough to draw police, EMS and hospital staff into action.
