A southbound pickup veered off Route U about three miles south of Langdon and slammed into an embankment and culvert, leaving two Rock Port men with moderate injuries and the truck totaled in a midday rural crash.

The wreck happened at about 12:12 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2026, in Atchison County. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado crossed the center of the roadway, ran off the east side of Route U, and struck an embankment with the front driver’s side bumper. The truck continued southbound in a ditch, hit a culvert, and came to rest on its wheels facing southeast off the east side of the road.

The 66-year-old driver from Rock Port and a 39-year-old Rock Port man riding in the pickup both sustained moderate injuries. Neither man was wearing a seat belt. The Atchison-Holt Ambulance District transported both to Fairfax Community Hospital, the main hospital serving Atchison and Holt counties and parts of Nodaway County.

The Chevrolet Silverado was a total loss and was towed from the scene by Double M Towing of Rock Port. Assisting agencies included the Atchison County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri Department of Conservation, Rock Port Fire Department, and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District.

The crash unfolded in a county that spans about 547 square miles but has only about 5,300 residents, leaving many roads lightly traveled and heavily dependent on quick emergency response when collisions happen. Atchison County’s county seat is Rock Port, and the Atchison-Holt Ambulance District, formed in 1974, staffs two crews around the clock, seven days a week. On roads like Route U, where pavement can give way quickly to ditches, embankments, and culverts, a minor drift across the centerline can turn into a serious injury crash in seconds.
