Millbrook police investigate human remains found in Lakeshore lake

Millbrook police are trying to identify a man whose remains were found in a small lake near the Lakeshore community after a resident reported seeing what appeared to be a body floating near Lakeview Drive. Officers recovered the remains from the shoreline area off the 2700 block of Sandtown Road, just south of Helms Drive, and said the case remains an active death investigation.

Chief P.K. Johnson said the call came in Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from a home in the 4100 block of Lakeview Drive. Responding officers entered the area from Sandtown Road and confirmed that human remains were in the water close to the shoreline. Detectives from the Millbrook Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit and personnel from the Millbrook Fire Department recovered the body.

Police said their initial examination did not show any obvious signs of foul play, but investigators have not determined the identity of the deceased or the cause of death. The remains were sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy and identification.

At this point, investigators have only a limited description to work from. Police said the body was that of a black male adult, about 30 to 50 years old, weighing roughly 180 to 200 pounds, and wearing black shorts, a black tank top and white tennis shoes. Millbrook police said they have not found a missing-person report in their own jurisdiction that matches that description and have begun contacting agencies in surrounding areas.

The investigation has also drawn on broader missing-person resources that state and national authorities use in unidentified cases. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Alabama Center for Missing & Exploited Children serves as a repository for missing persons and unidentified deceased persons, while the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System lists 15,498 open unidentified-person cases in its latest monthly statistics.

Millbrook, which sits about 10 miles north of Montgomery and spans Elmore and Autauga counties, has been growing for years. The U.S. Census Bureau listed its 2020 population at 16,564, and the city says it is approaching 17,000.
