Prattville chamber awards scholarships to early childhood education students

The Prattville Area Chamber of Commerce awarded scholarships to ACTC early childhood education students, putting local business support behind the workforce that staffs child care classrooms. The chamber did not list scholarship amounts or the number of recipients, but the choice of program is pointed: it backs a field that affects who can work, who can afford care and how many child care seats Prattville can sustain.

Early childhood education sits at the center of Autauga County’s labor market. When students complete training for child care and preschool jobs, more local centers have a deeper hiring pool, parents have a better chance of finding reliable care and employers are less likely to lose workers who cannot arrange child care. The scholarships also help students absorb tuition, books and other costs that can slow completion of a credential.

The investment lands in a broader child care workforce squeeze. A National Association for the Education of Young Children survey found four in five child care centers in the United States were understaffed, a sign that staffing remains a persistent problem well beyond one city or county. In that setting, Prattville’s scholarship decision is less about a ceremonial check and more about building the supply of trained workers who can fill future openings in local classrooms.

The chamber’s involvement is not new. Its website says it has been “Proudly Serving Our Community for Over 50 Years,” and prior local coverage has tied the organization to workforce and education efforts in Autauga County. In 2020, the chamber and Autauga County Technology Center worked together to close the workforce gap, and in 2023 the chamber helped celebrate ACTC’s expansion with a ribbon cutting. Local education roundtables have also kept school and workforce issues on the civic agenda in Prattville.

That history makes the scholarship announcement more than a one-off donation. It is another step in a long-running chamber strategy that links business needs to classroom training, especially in occupations like early childhood education where the supply of workers shapes whether parents can stay on the job. For Prattville employers, that connection is as practical as it is civic.
