Stanhope Elmore names veteran assistant Wade Atchley as baseball coach

Stanhope Elmore turned to veteran assistant Wade Atchley to lead its baseball program next year, giving one of Millbrook’s most visible athletic jobs to a coach who already knew the campus, the players and the expectations. Atchley had spent the last six seasons on the Stanhope Elmore staff and had been part of the Millbrook community for more than 30 years.

The move pointed to continuity more than overhaul. A staff listing at Coosada Elementary School identifies Atchley as a physical education teacher and says he also serves as an assistant baseball coach at Stanhope Elmore High School, underscoring how familiar he already was to families inside the school system. That kind of local tie can matter in a program where summer workouts, communication with parents and the day-to-day tone around the locker room often shape the season as much as game planning.

Atchley takes over a program with recent results that raise the bar immediately. Stanhope Elmore reached the Class 6A semifinals in 2023, its best season in 17 years, and advanced to the state championship series for the first time since 2006. The Mustangs followed that by winning the Class 6A Area 4 championship in April 2026 for the second consecutive season, leaving the next coach with a team that was already accustomed to postseason pressure.

That history explains why the job carries so much weight in Millbrook. Stanhope Elmore’s baseball record includes a Class 5A state championship in 2006 and deep playoff runs in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2022, 2023, 2025 and 2026. The school’s baseball tradition has helped define part of the identity of Stanhope Elmore High School, and the program’s next chapter will be judged against that long run of success.

For players moving into the program and the parents who follow them, Atchley’s hire signaled steadiness at a moment when the Mustangs did not need to start over. He inherited a group that had already won big games and a community that expects the baseball program to stay near the top of Class 6A.
