UAB partnership brings free dental screenings to Millbrook seniors
Free dental screenings at Millbrook Senior Center exposed how Medicare gaps and delayed care leave tri-county seniors without basic oral health options.

Older adults in Autauga, Elmore and Montgomery counties got a no-cost dental checkup at the Millbrook Senior Center, a small but telling response to a bigger problem: many seniors put off oral care because it is expensive, hard to reach and often not covered by Medicare.
The screening day paired advanced dental students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry with the Central Alabama Aging Consortium in a pilot effort aimed at seniors who might otherwise go without routine care. Millbrook was chosen because of its central location and because the senior center is one of the area’s busiest, most active gathering spots, making it a practical place to reach residents from across the tri-county region.
The process was intentionally simple. Participants answered questions about when they last saw a dentist, whether they had recent tooth pain that needed urgent care, and whether they were dealing with dry mouth or trouble chewing. Students collected no personal identifying information and did only a brief visual inspection with a flashlight, not a full dental exam. The goal was to catch warning signs early, identify seniors who may need a more complete follow-up and connect interested participants with resources.

That approach reflects the reality facing older adults across the region. Dental care is often one of the first health services to be delayed when people are living on fixed incomes, and Medicare usually does not cover routine dental services. For seniors, that gap can turn a missing cleaning or untreated pain into a more serious medical problem, especially when chewing problems or dry mouth start to affect nutrition and daily comfort.
Participants who completed the screening received a complimentary bag of oral health supplies tailored to their needs, including items for natural teeth or denture care. For some older residents, even basic supplies can be a barrier, especially when they are balancing medicine costs, transportation limits and other household expenses.

CAAC Executive Director Yolanda Evans said the organization was proud to partner with UAB to provide the free service and emphasized that dental care is a critical part of overall health and can help prevent additional complications. CAAC manages 19 senior centers in the tri-county area, and the organization hopes to bring the program to a Montgomery senior center in the fall.
For seniors in Autauga County and beyond, the screenings pointed to more than a one-day event. They showed how much unmet need still exists for affordable oral health care, and how quickly a basic checkup can reveal problems that have been pushed aside for too long.
