The City of Prattville Parks & Recreation Department and Way Off Broadway Theatre will present their first-ever outdoor production this summer, launching a new series called WOBT Spotlight on Spillway with a family-focused staging of Alice in Wonderland June 26, 27 and 28 at 7 p.m. nightly. The performances are slated for the newly constructed pavilion at Spillway Park in downtown Prattville, a move city leaders say will activate public space and expand cultural programming.

Martha Wilkinson, Theatre Coordinator for Way Off Broadway Theatre, said, "WOBT Spotlight on Spillway is about giving children a joyful first experience with live theatre." Wilkinson also described the production as "playful, imaginative, and the perfect story to experience outside, where the magic feels even bigger." The adaptation is by playwright Catherine Bush from Lewis Carroll’s classic tale.

Kellie Carter, Director of Parks & Recreation for the City of Prattville, called the collaboration a core example of the department’s mission. "This production represents everything we love about Parks and Recreation. It brings people together, activates our outdoor spaces in new ways, and creates memorable experiences for families. Hosting our first outdoor theater production at Spillway Park is going to be something truly special," Carter said. Carter has worked for the city for 16 years and has led Parks & Recreation since 2013.

Way Off Broadway Theatre is a fully city-funded program that stages five productions a year and offers classes and workshops for residents of all ages. The Cultural Arts & Special Events division of Prattville’s Parks & Recreation manages WOBT alongside the Prattville Community Chorus, Prattville Pops Community Band, Prattauga Art Guild, and the Prattville Creative Arts Center and Gallery. The series aims to draw children and first-time theatre-goers while delighting audiences across age groups.

City officials note the outdoor series comes as part of a broader effort to invest in park infrastructure and programming. Prattville Councilman Robert Strichik, chairman of the Prattville Parks and Recreation Committee, brings decades of local parks and athletics experience to the oversight role as the council continues methodical park improvements. The downtown setting near the fountain, Mill Apartments and Autauga Creek will provide a scenic backdrop for the performances.

Several practical details have not been released publicly: the city has not provided information on ticketing or admission, cast and creative team beyond the adapter, run time, seating policy, or weather contingency plans. Those specifics will need verification before families make attendance plans.

For Prattville residents, the WOBT Spotlight on Spillway series signals a tangible expansion of summer cultural options and an explicit use of new park infrastructure for community programming. Expect further announcements on logistics and future Spotlight productions as the Parks & Recreation Department and Way Off Broadway Theatre finalize plans.
