Baker Boys, Girls Both Win Team Titles at Wayne Invitational
Baker swept both Wayne Invitational team titles Friday, the girls edging host Vale 144-131.5 and the boys outpacing Nyssa by 44 points.

Sammy Gressley has been rewriting Baker's record book in sprints all spring. On Friday at Vale High School, she and her teammates added team trophies to the collection.
Baker's girls outscored host Vale 144 to 131.5 at the Wayne Invitational, a 12.5-point edge that held through the final events of the afternoon. The boys were more decisive, posting 138 points to Nyssa's 94, sweeping both team titles on the same day.
The twin victories carry weight beyond a single Friday in Vale. Regional invitationals like Wayne serve as early-season pressure tests before conference meets and district qualifiers, and sweeping both titles signals genuine depth across sprints, jumps, throws and distance. No single event produces a 138 or 144-point day; that kind of scoring requires athletes finishing in the top eight across the full card.
The 12.5-point gap over Vale was the slimmer of the two margins, and it came against a host program competing on familiar ground. For Baker's girls, holding off Vale under those conditions stands as one of the afternoon's sharper results.
Powder Valley, running combined entries with Baker in several events, placed 12th in the boys field with eight points and seventh among the girls with 43.5 points, a competitive showing for a smaller program navigating a regional field. The Badgers' presence in both team standings reflects a program growing into the regional meet circuit.
Gressley remains the individual name to track as Baker heads into the conference stretch. Her record-setting sprint performances earlier this season have established her as one of the top prospects in the region, and she figures prominently in Baker's relay and individual sprint lineups as district and state qualifying meets draw closer.
For both Baker's boys and girls programs, the Wayne Invitational results confirm what the early-season records suggested: this roster has the depth to compete across a full meet, not just in marquee individual events. The conference level is the next threshold, and after sweeping Vale, Baker arrives there with momentum and a body of evidence that Friday was no fluke.
