Riders between La Grande and Baker City are on a temporary detour through Friday, May 9, after Community Connection of Northeast Oregon moved the intercity bus off Highway 30 because the road is closed between Haines and Baker City for road work. During the deviation, the bus will not travel through Haines, and passengers should expect an alternate route and possible changes in travel times.

That change reaches far beyond a simple schedule note. For workers commuting between the two cities, people heading to medical appointments, students with school obligations and residents making grocery runs or seeing family, the route through Baker County is part of the day’s basic logistics. In a rural area where many riders do not have a spare vehicle waiting at home, even a short detour can mean a missed appointment, a late shift or a longer wait for a connection.

Community Connection says riders should check its transit page and Facebook page for route changes and alerts. NEOTransit serves Northeast Oregon’s public transit routes, and Baker County says it partners with Community Connection to provide public transportation throughout the county. That service includes local bus routes, rides to wellness and other transportation options for seniors, people with disabilities and other residents who depend on transit to stay connected to work, healthcare and community resources.

The current detour comes after a series of route adjustments already affecting local riders this year. In January, La Grande’s Blue, Yellow and Saturday services switched to a new schedule on Jan. 5, and Baker City’s fare-free bus route also received a schedule update that took effect the same day. For riders who plan trips around narrow appointment windows or fixed work hours, those changes make it especially important to confirm the day’s timetable before leaving home.

The timing also highlights how fragile rural transit can be when road work and funding pressures collide. In July 2025, Community Connection reduced Baker County transit hours after losing $225,000 in federal grants, laying off two part-time bus drivers and its full-time transportation manager. That history underscores why a temporary closure on Highway 30 can ripple so quickly through Baker City, La Grande and the smaller communities in between.

Through May 9, riders on the La Grande-Baker City corridor will need to allow extra time and plan around the Haines bypass while Highway 30 remains closed. In Eastern Oregon, a few miles of road work can still reshape an entire day.
