A jackknifed semi on Interstate 84 westbound north of Baker City left about 200 feet of highway fence damaged and turned a single lane-departure into roadside repair work on one of Baker County’s main freight corridors. The Baker County Sheriff’s Office logged the wreck as a non-injury motor vehicle accident at 6:39 a.m. on April 17, and Oregon State Police said it occurred around 6:42 a.m. near milepost 303.

OSP said the vehicle was a white 2021 Volvo semi-truck pulling a 53-foot van-style trailer. According to the crash summary, the truck first drifted off the right shoulder, reentered the interstate, crossed into the left lane, then left the roadway off the right shoulder again. It jackknifed and hit a barbed-wire and netting fence before coming to rest on its wheels. The crash damaged about 200 feet of fence, 10 steel posts, one folded road sign and four reflectors, even though only minor injuries were reported.

The driver was cited for failing to drive within lane, and the trucking company arranged its own tow. Oregon Department of Transportation requires motor carriers on public highways to carry proof of public liability and property damage insurance, so the repair bill for the fence and roadside hardware will likely run through the carrier’s required coverage. For Baker City and travelers using I-84, the crash is a reminder that one commercial truck drifting across a shoulder can leave behind damage that reaches far beyond the cab and trailer.
