After 87 years of operating exclusively in the counties north and east of Baltimore, APG Federal Credit Union has chosen Canton's Can Company complex for its first physical branch inside city limits, the credit union announced March 23.

Founded in 1939 by workers at the U.S. Army proving ground in Aberdeen, Maryland, APGFCU, which stands for Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union, is Maryland's fifth-largest credit union and currently operates 17 branches. The institution counts more than 182,000 members spread across Baltimore, Harford, and Cecil counties, as well as Baltimore City.

The Can Company is a former industrial facility converted into a mixed-use complex that preserves the historic factory structure. The historic building on Boston Street was a huge part of Canton's revitalization starting in the 1990s, and when the old factory complex was transformed into a retail and office complex, it solidified Canton as one of Baltimore City's most popular neighborhoods. Construction on the new APGFCU storefront is set to begin in the third quarter of 2026; the credit union did not disclose a projected opening date.

The Canton expansion comes as APGFCU simultaneously absorbs the membership of Members First of Maryland Federal Credit Union. On March 31, 2026, accounts will be converted from the former Members First of Maryland Federal Credit Union to APGFCU, allowing members to take full advantage of the wide range of products and services APGFCU offers. The Dundalk and Perry Hall branches are ready to serve customers and answer questions in the lead-up to the transition. Those two branches will close at 4 p.m. on March 31, and beginning Wednesday, April 1, 2026, members can make transactions and loan payments through APGFCU. APGFCU branches will open at 9 a.m. that day, with the call center available starting at 8 a.m.

Members can continue using MFMFCU Online Banking and Bill Pay through March 31, 2026; on April 1, they must enroll in APGFCU Online Banking by visiting apgfcu.com/OnlineBanking and clicking the Enroll Now button.

The credit union's push into Baltimore City represents both a geographic and symbolic shift for an institution whose entire branch footprint has, until now, hugged the I-95 corridor north of the city line. APG Federal Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative with a mission to help members build their wealth, and the Canton location would put that mission within reach of one of the city's most densely populated and commercially active waterfront neighborhoods. Additional details about the branch, including its services, hours, and staffing, had not been released as of the announcement.
