Bamberg County schools board to vote on track team state trip travel requests

Bamberg County school trustees were set to take up travel approval for two track teams just one day before the Class A state championship in Columbia, a vote that put student athletics, district spending and end-of-year logistics in the same room.

The Bamberg County School District Board of Trustees scheduled a special called virtual meeting for Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. Residents were told they could watch it live on the district’s YouTube page or through the school website. The agenda was short and focused: board members were to approve the agenda itself and consider travel requests for the Bamberg-Ehrhardt and Denmark-Olar track teams to attend the state championship on May 15-16 in Columbia. The public notice did not list a dollar amount for the trips.

In a county where school decisions are felt quickly in Bamberg, Denmark, Ehrhardt, Olar and Govan, a travel vote like this is more than routine paperwork. Trustees were being asked to clear the way for athletes to represent their schools on the postseason stage, while also signaling how the district handles transportation, supervision and the public funds that support school athletics.

The timing also mattered. Bamberg County School District’s 2025-26 calendar shows Memorial Day holidays beginning May 22 and running through May 25, the end of the second semester on May 28, and professional development on May 29. With the school year entering its final stretch, any trip to Columbia had to fit into a compressed schedule that already included exams, recognition events and closing tasks for staff.

The district’s own calendar and board pages showed a cluster of late-spring governance activity, including a special called meeting on May 1 and a monthly board meeting on May 4. That run of meetings underscored how many decisions were moving at once as the academic year wound down.

The athletics stakes were clear. Bamberg-Ehrhardt’s girls track team won the Class A state championship on May 15, 2025, and local coverage in mid-May 2026 said the team repeated as Class A champions at the state meet in Columbia. For trustees, the travel request was tied to programs that have already shown they can contend for state titles, making the board’s approval part of the support structure behind those wins.
