Body found outside Bamberg County Courthouse identified as James Gibson
The body found Feb. 7 outside the Bamberg County Courthouse was identified as 71-year-old James Gibson, deepening an active investigation at a county landmark.

A body found Feb. 7 outside the Bamberg County Courthouse has been identified as 71-year-old James Gibson, turning an initially unnamed death investigation into a case centered on one of Bamberg County’s most visible public buildings.
The discovery drew immediate attention because it happened at the historic courthouse in downtown Bamberg, a building long tied to county government and to the county’s identity. Bamberg County says Family and Circuit Court were moved to the Bamberg Civic Center on July 1, 2022, while renovations continue at the courthouse on Main Highway.
Authorities had first reported the body as unidentified, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Bamberg County Coroner’s Office were investigating. The identification of Gibson adds a name, an age and a clearer timeline to a case that remains under investigation.
The courthouse itself has been part of a larger public discussion for years. Bamberg County was formed in 1897, and the courthouse has remained a civic landmark in the county seat. On June 4, 2018, Bamberg County Council approved a resolution supporting a plan to finance renovation of the historic courthouse, underscoring how long the building has remained in the public eye as repairs and court relocations have continued.
That history gives added weight to the discovery outside the building. The site is not only a government property but also a place residents associate with county business, court dates and the daily movement of people through downtown Bamberg. A death investigation there raises immediate questions about security, access and how the area around the courthouse is being monitored while renovations continue.
For now, officials have not publicly explained how Gibson died or what led investigators to the scene outside the courthouse. The case remains active, and the identification of Gibson marks the latest development in a situation that has already forced county residents to confront a disturbing event at a familiar civic site.
