83-Year-Old Bemidji Man Injured in Icy Rollover Near Wilton
An 83-year-old Bemidji man was injured when his truck rolled on icy Highway 2 near Wilton; the crash highlights winter driving risks for local residents.

A single-vehicle rollover on Highway 2 at Highway 89 in Eckles Township left 83-year-old Bemidji resident Leroy Allen Engesether injured after his pickup lost control on icy roads, Minnesota State Patrol troopers said. The truck entered the median and rolled, and troopers listed snow and ice as the road condition.
Beltrami County deputies and Bemidji fire crews responded to the scene and assisted the State Patrol. Engesether was treated at Sanford Health in Bemidji; officials reported his injuries were not life-threatening. Troopers investigated the crash following the Jan. 27 incident and assigned a State Patrol case number for the file. Crash reports are available through the Minnesota State Patrol upon request.
The crash underscores continuing winter hazards on Highway 2, a key east-west route used by commuters, school buses and commercial traffic. Motorists in Beltrami County are frequently forced to navigate changing conditions this time of year - packed snow, black ice and drifting on open stretches around Wilton. Local emergency responders said icy conditions played a central role in the rollover.
Public health and community impacts extend beyond the individual crash. Older drivers, like Engesether, face higher risks of injury in vehicle collisions, and rural incidents place added strain on county emergency services and regional hospitals. Sanford Health continues to be a primary care and trauma resource for northern Beltrami County, but repeated winter crashes can stretch ambulance availability and firefighter resources across the county.

The incident also raises questions about road treatment and winter maintenance on state highways that connect small townships to Bemidji. Local public works and state road crews balance limited budgets and staffing while trying to keep Highway 2 passable during snow and ice events. Residents who rely on these roads for work, school and medical appointments should consider travel plans and allow extra time during active winter weather.
Troopers continue to document the scene and complete their report. Residents who need a copy of the crash report or additional details can contact the Minnesota State Patrol or the Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office for records and instructions on requesting reports. For the community, the rollover is a reminder to check tires and drivability, reduce speed on slick stretches and consider postponing nonessential trips during hazardous conditions.
