Weapons surfaced during a burglary investigation in northern Beltrami County, turning a property case into a broader safety concern for the area. A Thief River Falls man is facing burglary charges in connection with the case.

That matters in Beltrami County, where the sheriff’s office says it patrols 3,056 square miles and protects more than 47,000 residents. The office also says the county’s summertime population can more than double as tourists and outdoor recreation push traffic across the lakes, forests and road network that stretch from Bemidji to the far northern reaches of the county.

The latest case fits a pattern deputies have seen before. In one separate arrest, Deputy Anthony Hanson and K9 Rip assisted in a weapons case that ended with a jail booking for possession of a pistol without a permit. In another Bemidji burglary case, a suspect was charged with first-degree burglary involving possession of a dangerous weapon and second-degree assault.

Beltrami County has repeatedly dealt with burglary investigations that cross into weapons allegations, a reminder that break-ins in a county this large can quickly become more serious public-safety incidents. For residents, the significance is not just the charge itself, but the way a burglary probe can widen when firearms or other weapons are uncovered in the same investigation.
