Dillon Taylor, 26, was driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of US Highway 2 at speeds topping 80 miles per hour when Beltrami County deputies ended his flight with a pursuit intervention technique on Cardinal Road NW, taking him into custody on the afternoon of October 22, 2024.

The incident began when the Beltrami County Emergency Communications Center received a tip around 4:30 p.m. that a subject with an outstanding felony warrant was driving westbound from Bemidji in a blue Chevrolet Equinox. Deputies located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near the intersection of State Highway 89 and US Highway 2 in Eckles Township, west of Bemidji.

Taylor initially stopped but then fled northbound. His route quickly turned dangerous: he reversed direction and drove the Equinox eastbound in the westbound travel lanes of US Highway 2, placing any oncoming drivers directly in his path with no warning. He corrected course at Eckles Road NW and continued northbound on Cardinal Road NW, where deputies deployed a PIT maneuver, spinning the vehicle to a stop and taking Taylor into custody without further incident.

Taylor was transported to the Beltrami County Jail and faces charges of felony fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle, gross misdemeanor driving while impaired, and an outstanding felony warrant. Under Minnesota law, felony fleeing a peace officer carries significant penalties, reflecting the gravity the state places on endangering the public during a law enforcement pursuit.

Sheriff Jason Riggs issued the press release detailing the arrest. The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office patrols more than 3,000 square miles and serves more than 47,000 residents, a footprint that includes dozens of rural townships and smaller communities served by contract. Summertime population in the county more than doubles as tourists arrive for resorts and outdoor recreation, stretching enforcement resources across a vast area.

US Highway 2 is the primary east-west corridor through northern Minnesota, used daily by commuters, commercial trucks, and travelers. Wrong-way driving on that highway, even briefly, leaves approaching drivers almost no reaction time. If you encounter a law enforcement pursuit in progress on a two-lane highway, the safest response is to pull as far right as safely possible and come to a complete stop until all vehicles have passed.

With warrant enforcement and traffic interdiction active along major corridors, deputies have been concentrating patrols on the US Highway 2 corridor through Eckles Township, the stretch where Tuesday's pursuit originated.
