Beltrami History Center Unveils Louis and Mary Lou Marchand Library and Archives
Beltrami County History Center opened the Louis and Mary Lou Marchand Library and Archives at 130 Minnesota Ave. SW, giving volunteers climate-controlled research space and improved public access.

The Beltrami County History Center opened the Louis and Mary Lou Marchand Library and Archives at 130 Minnesota Ave. SW in downtown Bemidji on Saturday, Feb. 21, providing climate-controlled research space intended to improve public access to county records and collections. A ribbon cutting and public open house ran from 10 a.m. to noon, and the event was free with refreshments provided.
"The Beltrami County Historical Society invites the public to celebrate the opening of the Louis and Mary Lou Marchand Library and Archives with a ribbon cutting and open house from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the history center, 130 Minnesota Ave. SW," the society said in its event release circulated before the opening. Community members were encouraged to tour the new space and learn how the archives will support research, preservation and public access to local history.
BCHS emphasized the operational benefits of the buildout in its release. "The Marchand Library creates a larger, dedicated research space for volunteers who assist both the Historical Society and the public with research questions and the preservation of documents, photographs and records that tell the story of Beltrami County and its people," the release states. The society also noted that "the new space improves public access to historical materials while ensuring their long-term care," language repeated in promotional items from the Bemidji Pioneer, Yahoo and the Minnesota Historical Society listings.
Funding for the Marchand Library and Archives included contributions from several private donors and a Beltrami Electric Cooperative Operation RoundUp Grant, according to BCHS promotional materials distributed ahead of the Feb. 21 opening. The society credited those funding sources in event listings on its website and in syndicated notices.

Operational context for visitors and volunteers was provided on the BCHS website. The museum at 130 Minnesota Ave. SW lists regular hours as Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and closed Sunday through Tuesday; admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for K–college visitors, $4 per person for groups of seven or more, free for children 5 and under, free for SNAP cardholders and free for members. BCHS event copy highlighted that volunteers will use the new archive space to assist researchers and to preserve photographs, documents and records from the collections.
Local heritage items carried by BCHS were on display or cited in related promotional material; the Minnesota Historical Society repost of the event referenced a 1938 Paul Bunyan float image from the Beltrami County Historical Society collections. The Bemidji Pioneer’s Facebook post promoting the opening generated 21 reactions and two shares in the days before the event, indicating modest local engagement.
The society’s release and partner listings did not include biographical details for Louis and Mary Lou Marchand, a complete donor roll or construction specifications such as square footage, HVAC targets or project cost. Emily Thabes, BCHS executive director, framed the opening as a turning point: "The opening of this library and archives is an important milestone for preserving our community’s memory and honoring two historians whose enthusiasm and generosity shaped this organization," Thabes said in the release.
