Small arts groups around Bemidji will soon be able to compete for up to $1,500 in local support, and young string players have a separate chance at help with lessons and study. The Bemidji Area Arts Endowment will open its online grant application window on Friday, May 1, and the Everett Wilimek Endowment for Orchestral String Studies will open its grant round at the same time.

For nonprofits within 30 miles of Bemidji, the arts endowment is the more immediate option. Eligible applicants have included schools, nonprofit groups and nonprofit arts organizations in the Bemidji area, and organizations that are not schools or 501(c)(3) groups must use a fiscal agent. Previous rounds were online only, with no printed applications available, a setup that puts the burden on applicants to get everything submitted digitally and on time.

The separate Wilimek fund is aimed at children ages 8 to 15 who study violin, viola, cello or bass. Awards are based on need, and the fund was created by the Everett Wilimek family to honor his memory, his love of music and his dedication to young musicians. That makes the opportunity narrower than the general arts grants, but potentially important for families trying to keep music instruction affordable.

The endowment says its mission is “to create a community in which the arts flourish and enhance our lives.” Its 2025 grants were supported by the Bemidji Area Arts Endowment itself plus three named component funds, the Richard and Pam Nelson Family Visual Arts Fund, the Patt and Ernie Rall Children’s Performing Arts Fund and the John Rabel Memorial Music Fund. A recent business listing said the endowment had granted out more than $32,000 to support the arts in the Bemidji area, a sign that the program has already moved real money into local schools, workshops, performances and youth programming.

That spending matters in a county where even modest grants can decide whether a project gets off the ground or stays on paper. The Bemidji-area funding structure reaches beyond the city limits, giving nearby communities a shot at support for arts work that often struggles to cover supplies, instruction and program costs on ticket sales alone.
