Bemidji Council approves Ward 1 polling move, vote splits 4 to 3

The Bemidji City Council approved a change to Ward 1’s official polling place during its Dec. 15, 2025 meeting, moving voting operations from Bemidji State University’s American Indian Resource Center to the Northwest Indian Community Development Center gathering room at 1819 Bemidji Ave. N. Councilors voted 4 to 3 to adopt the new location after city staff arranged tours of several alternate facilities.

Bemidji State University had requested that voting be moved off the AIRC citing increased campus traffic and concerns about access and congestion during elections. City staff responded by evaluating alternative sites that could serve Ward 1 voters and ultimately recommended the NWICDC gathering room as the most suitable option for the coming election cycle.

Council debate focused on competing priorities. Supporters emphasized access and operational considerations raised by the university and the availability of the NWICDC space. Opponents raised concerns that relocating the polling place away from a central campus facility could depress student turnout and create safety challenges for voters crossing busy corridors between campus and the new site. The vote was narrowly divided, reflecting those contrasting views.

The council noted that there is a legal requirement that large postsecondary campuses be offered an additional polling place option, and the city sought to meet statutory obligations while addressing facility constraints. The change approved on Dec. 15 will be in place for the coming election cycle, and Ward 1 voters should verify their polling place before Election Day.
