Bemidji Pioneer Wins 17 Awards at MNA Better Newspaper Contest Gala
The Bemidji Pioneer won 17 awards, including seven first-place honors such as General Excellence and Sports Reporting, at the MNA Better Newspaper Contest gala in Brooklyn Park.

The Bemidji Pioneer brought home 17 awards at the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest Awards Gala, held Jan. 29 in Brooklyn Park, including seven first-place awards with top honors in General Excellence and Sports Reporting. The contest judged work submitted during the Sept. 2024–Aug. 2025 entry window, and “expert judges from Iowa” reviewed 4,102 entries to determine winners.
Pioneer General Manager Christine Olson framed the haul as a community measure of trust, saying, “Being recognized by the Minnesota Newspaper Association, with seven first-place awards including General Excellence and Sports Reporting, reflects the trust our community places in us.” Olson added a broader mission point: “Every story, photo and headline is created with Bemidji and the surrounding region in mind. In Greater Minnesota, where news deserts unfortunately do exist, local newspapers like The Pioneer remain a vital source of trusted information, and that responsibility matters more than ever to our team.”
The paper’s awards included placements across multiple categories; among them, a human-interest profile about Bemidji High School graduate Cale Newby and his friend Matheson Brown, who attempted to beat the world record for the fastest time to climb the highest points in each state, placed third in its category. A contest judge praised that profile: “Good job on describing the story of two climbers on their perilous, record-setting adventure,” the judge said. “The description made me feel, at times, I was on the mountain climbing with them.” The news copy announcing the awards does not identify the reporter by name for that third-place entry; the source uses the pronoun “He” without further identification.
Local and regional outlets picked up the awards reporting; Lakeland PBS’s Lakeland News posted a story headlined “Bemidji Pioneer Honored With 17 Minnesota Newspaper Association Awards” on Feb. 20, 2026. The Bemidji Pioneer also flagged the result on social media, publishing an Instagram post that read, “The Bemidji Pioneer received a total of 17 awards during the Minnesota Newspaper Association's 159th annual convention.”
Olson applauded staff work in newsroom copy, noting that the team’s effort led to “the paper bringing home a significant number of awards again this year.” With the MNA recognition tied to work produced between September 2024 and August 2025, the Pioneer’s leadership positions the results as validation of continued local reporting in Beltrami County and Greater Minnesota. The paper did not publish a complete list of all 17 award categories and individual winners in the announcement; the organization says full award details can be obtained from the Minnesota Newspaper Association or by request to the Pioneer.
