Bemidji Senior Center hosts pancake breakfast fundraiser May 9
A May 9 pancake breakfast at the Bemidji Senior Center will raise money for the nonprofit that helps older residents stay connected, fed and active in Beltrami County.

The Bemidji Senior Center will serve up its monthly pancake breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9, at 216 Third St. NW, with all proceeds going back to the center. The event gives Bemidji residents a low-cost way to support a local institution that serves as both a meal site and a daily gathering place for older adults in Beltrami County.
That support matters because the senior center relies on a mix of members, programs, grants and donations to keep its doors open. The center says it has no age restriction for membership and that its mission is to help seniors stay active, engaged and connected to the community. A fundraiser built around pancakes is a practical fit for that mission: it draws regulars, welcomes newcomers and helps underwrite the activities that keep the building busy throughout the month.
The center traces its roots to 1962, when seniors began gathering to play cards at an ice skating shack in Bemidji. What started as a simple meeting place has grown into a hub for weekly music jam sessions, monthly dances, exercise classes, mahjong, bingo, craft activities and a senior-volunteer reading program for children. Monthly pancake breakfasts are part of that same calendar, giving the center a recurring way to bring people together while raising money at the same time.
The Minnesota Department of Administration’s state senior-centers listing places the Bemidji Senior Center in Beltrami County and says it is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The listing also says meals are available for a $5 donation, while people younger than 60 may eat at the nutrition site for $8.75. Most activities are open to both members and non-members, extending the center’s reach beyond a single group of regulars.

Its services go beyond recreation. The state listing says AARP Volunteer Tax Preparers assist with income tax returns from Feb. 1 through April 15, and that help is available for property tax and rental rebate applications in June, July and August. The center also offers driver safety programming, adding another layer of support for older adults who want to stay independent.
