Big Bog State Recreation Area near Waskish is set to host a "Wonders of the Night Sky" event from 9 to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, giving Beltrami County residents a rare guided look at one of the darkest skies in Minnesota.

The program is timed to celebrate International Dark Sky Week, inviting attendees to explore constellations while learning how the night sky has guided people and animals for millions of years. Participants will practice spotting patterns among the stars and learn the names and stories connected to common constellations.

The group will meet at the Visitor Center for a presentation before walking or driving to the beach to view the expansive night sky over Upper Red Lake and look through a telescope.

The location gives the event an advantage few venues in the region can match. Big Bog is a recognized dark sky location in Minnesota, rated Bortle Class 2, a designation that reflects skies dark enough to reveal faint structures in the Milky Way with the naked eye. Most metro-adjacent sites in Minnesota rank several classes higher, meaning far more light pollution and far fewer visible stars.

The recreation area sits on Minnesota State Highway 72, north of Waskish, covering 9,459 acres of swamps, bogs, and upland islands. That remoteness, which can feel like a liability in daylight, becomes a genuine asset after dark.

International Dark Sky Week runs April 13 through 20 this year, and the April 18 event at Big Bog falls near its peak. The program is free and open to the public.
