KB101 named national finalist, recognition highlights local storm response
On December 10, 2025, Bemidji radio station KB101 was announced as one of 50 nationwide finalists for the 2026 NAB Crystal Radio Awards, recognizing its community service. The honor underscores the station's role during severe summer storms and raises its profile for local listeners, emergency partners, and potential funders.

On December 10, 2025, KB101.1 FM in Bemidji learned it had been selected as one of 50 finalists for the 2026 NAB Crystal Radio Awards, presented by the National Association of Broadcasters. The award recognizes stations for sustained community service, and the recognition spotlights KB101 as a local information lifeline during crisis moments.
"This prestigious award, established in 1987, honors radio stations that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to community service, including efforts in public safety, charitable initiatives and local engagement," a release said. "Finalists are chosen based on their year round contributions to the communities they serve." The release specifically credited KB101 for its work during the severe summer storms that affected the Bemidji area earlier this year. "KB101 earned this recognition thanks to its unwavering dedication to Bemidji and the surrounding areas, especially during the severe summer storms that impacted the region earlier this year," the release said. "The station provided critical updates, comfort and connection when listeners needed it most."
KB101.1 FM is a country music station owned and operated by Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. Station Manager Bruce McKirdy framed the nomination as community driven. "This isn’t just about an award, it’s about the people here in Bemidji," he said. "When those storms hit this summer, our listeners stuck with us, and we stuck with them. Kev Jackson and our staff were on air day and night, making sure people had the information they needed. The way this community pulled together was incredible, and we’re just thankful to be a part of it."

Local leaders and emergency managers have increasingly leaned on local radio as a stable channel during power outages and limited cell service. For listeners in Beltrami County, the finalist designation validates the station’s investments in staffing and equipment that sustained round the clock coverage during emergencies. Market wise, national recognition can translate into stronger underwriting, higher public trust, and new partnership opportunities for community resilience programs.
Winners will be announced March 3, 2026, during the NAB State Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., when KB101 will learn whether its year round service receives the national award.
