Northwest Technical College Hosts 60th Anniversary Ice Fishing Tournament on Lake Bemidji
Northwest Technical College will host a 60th anniversary ice fishing tournament on Lake Bemidji Feb. 7, offering prizes and community outreach tied to the college's trades programs.

Community members, alumni and students are invited to take part in an ice fishing tournament organized by Northwest Technical College as part of the college's 60th anniversary celebration. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, on Lake Bemidji behind the Green Mill restaurant at 1025 Paul Bunyan Drive SE, with lake access available from the Nymore Beach public landing.
The tournament is being hosted by Northwest Technical College's trades programs: automotive service and performance; electrical construction and maintenance; heating, air and refrigeration technology; and plumbing technology. The college is positioning the event as both a community gathering and an opportunity to showcase hands-on career training that feeds local labor needs.
Registration is open through Friday, Feb. 6, at bsualumni.org/events/ntc-fishing. NTC alumni, friends and community members may register for $10. Northwest Technical College students and children 17 and under may compete free of charge when accompanied by an adult. All participants 16 and older must possess a valid Minnesota fishing license at the time of the tournament. Participants are required to provide their own gear. Awards and door prizes will be available during the event. For more information, contact Gwen Oster at gwen.oster@ntcmn.edu.
The tournament offers several community benefits. For Northwest Technical College, the event is a visible recruitment and outreach tool for trades programs that supply local employers with technicians and installers. For alumni and longtime Bemidji residents, the tournament is a low-barrier way to reconnect with the college and support student programs. The modest registration fee and free entry for students and youth lower financial barriers to participation, supporting inclusion across age groups.

Holding the tournament behind an established business such as the Green Mill and using the Nymore Beach public landing signals coordination between a community institution and public amenities. The event draws participants onto Lake Bemidji during prime winter recreation season, contributing to downtown foot traffic and routine patronage of nearby businesses.
Practical details matter for participants: confirm a valid Minnesota fishing license if age 16 or older, bring personal gear, and complete registration by Feb. 6 at the provided URL. The tournament will be a test of local skill and a showcase for trades education; readers interested in community engagement, workforce development or a family-friendly winter activity will find a straightforward opportunity to participate.
