One hospitalized after early morning shooting in Cass Lake

A 39-year-old man was hospitalized after shots were heard around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday in Pike Bay Township, in the Tract 33 housing area of rural Cass Lake, and investigators have not identified a suspect.

The man arrived at Cass Lake Indian Health Services with a gunshot wound and was later transported to another health care facility. Authorities did not immediately release the extent of his injuries, and the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting remained under investigation.

Deputies searched residences and secured a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting, according to later reporting based on a sheriff’s office release. The Leech Lake Tribal Police Department was assisting in the case, adding a tribal law-enforcement response to the county investigation in a part of the reservation service area that includes Cass Lake and surrounding communities.

Leech Lake Tribal Police patrol Cass Lake, Ball Club, Oak Point, Winnie Dam, Smokey Point, Inger, Squaw Lake, Onigum, Bena, Pennington, Sugar Point, Kego Lake and Battle Point. Their presence in the area reflects the layered public-safety responsibility on the Leech Lake Reservation, where tribal, county and state agencies often work together when violence breaks out.

The early-morning shooting also lands in a community that has seen firearm-related incidents before, including cases in the Cass Lake area that have led to arrests. For residents, the immediate concern remains whether investigators will identify who fired the shots in Tract 33, whether there is any continuing threat tied to the vehicle seized by deputies, and what additional details the sheriff’s office and tribal police may release next.

Authorities have not announced any arrests or said whether others may have been involved. For now, the most significant facts are narrow but serious: a man was shot, he was treated and transported, and law enforcement is still piecing together what happened in the early hours before dawn.
