State Offers Organized New Year Hikes, Lake Bemidji Leads Local Event
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced First Day Hikes scheduled for January 1, 2026 at a dozen state parks, including Lake Bemidji State Park. The free organized outings invite families and residents to start the year outdoors, while reminding participants that vehicle permits are required and park safety guidance should be followed.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced on December 22 that First Day Hikes will take place on January 1, 2026 at a dozen state parks across Minnesota, with Lake Bemidji State Park among the local sites offering a guided outdoor opportunity. The release said organized hikes will welcome New Year’s Day participants, and noted that some parks will offer snowshoeing if winter conditions allow. There is no participation fee for the hikes, but vehicle permits will be required for park access and participants are asked to follow park safety guidance.
For Beltrami County residents the announcement means a family friendly chance to gather outdoors on a holiday that can otherwise be isolating for some people. Organized hikes are intended to be accessible to a broad range of abilities and can provide both physical activity and social connection during a season when community bonding supports mental well being. Lake Bemidji State Park’s listing places a local welcome at the center of holiday plans, and gives families a ready option for an active, low cost outing.
Public health officials have long encouraged outdoor activity in winter as a way to support cardiovascular health and reduce stress when done safely. The DNR reminders about vehicle permits and safety aim to reduce preventable incidents on trails and to ensure those using parks follow regulations that protect natural resources. At the same time the requirement that vehicles carry permits can create a financial or logistical barrier for some households, especially those without easy access to a permitted vehicle. That raises equity questions for county leaders and park managers about how to support inclusive access to public lands.
Organized First Day Hikes also offer an opportunity for community groups, health providers, and local leaders to collaborate on outreach that helps residents participate safely. The statewide First Day Hike resources linked by the DNR provide event specifics and guidance for those planning to attend Lake Bemidji State Park on January 1. As winter weather arrives, families and neighbors planning to join the hike should prepare for cold conditions and plan travel with permits in mind.
